So I re-started my Ancestry.com quest and today hit a motherload of info on my mother's side, going back to 1420 in England. Seems some other people got there first and did the work for me. But as I was tracing back on her grandmother's family line, I saw my 6th-time great grandfather married and Emerson and I followed that back two more generations and that guy had married a woman with the last name Waldo. So I followed the lines of their 5 kids and turns out one of them was Ralph Waldo Emerson. We're cousins. Sorta.
So, I actually found my grandfather's yearbook page on there. He played basketball, which isn't shocking since he was 7 feet tall. His father was a veterinarian, and his grandfather was a painter/photographer.
I was following his family tree on his dad's side trying to find when the first came over from Scotland but hit a wall, so I switched to another branch and there's more German! My sister and I always thought we were just German on my dad's side. But nope, a family came here from Germany before the Revolutionary War and my 7 times great grandfather signed up. And he was married to a French girl.
I also found a relative that died in Salem Mass, but it was 2 years before the witch trial hysteria and it looks like the family moved right after since all of her kids lived way past the trials. Phew.
