College professor catches it in Italy, comes home to the northeast, doc tells him to self quarantine...
Goes to a conference instead... exposes everybody else at the conference.
I would be so pissed if I was one of those guys...
I was just reading about that. He could face jail time for that. But that is exactly the kind of selfishness we exhibit that is going to make this worse here than anywhere else. That and so many people who can't afford to miss work either because they don't have paid leave (which I do) or if they call in they'll lose their jobs (which I'm not sure about, TBH). Selfishness and financial self perseveration are the enemies now.
Our governor just declared a state of emergency because there are now 75+ cases in this state. We've also got a lab in my hometown running the tests so I don't think he's planning on waiting on the Federal government for permission to test people.
I doubt anyone would prefer someone coming to work over staying home with it... not even a boss. Unless that's some serious a-hole.
Other than that... he won't face any jail time because the law can't criminalize getting sick. Unfortunate as the case may be.
It may be much ado about nothing, but it will be interesting to see what it becomes in a first world medical society like ours. Not a whole lot you can do about a virus, but the secondary bacterial stuff can be prevented...

Seeing as it's so hard for people to get tested, if they don't feel well they'll just tell themselves it's the flu or a cold and go into work anyhow. Or they'll suspect it's coronavirus but because they can't get tested the asshole bosses won't care and will make them come in anyhow. Or these are people working jobs like being an Uber driver, Shipt shopper, or Door Dash delivery person so they don't have a singular boss to tell them one way or the other and someone can terminate them remotely for not making them money for a few weeks while they try not to help spread this.
There are laws about breaking quarantine, which is what he did. Edit: (Maybe the rules are different if it's "self-quarantine", but I'm not sure.)
I'm not worried about getting it. I'm worried about getting it and passing it on to someone else, and I'm worried about how everyone is going to react and the ramifications of everyone going to extremes to not get it/prepare for it.
First panic buying, (which is happening in some places already), which leads to price gouging because those who couldn't stock up will need supplies that are no longer on the shelves because of those people who could afford to stock up over-shopped. The markets are going to go wonky, which in itself doesn't mean anything (because the stock market isn't an actual indication of how the economy is really going), and the market going wonky will panic people even more and it'll be the excuse CEOs who aren't really running businesses but are playing a giant game of Monopoly will use as an excuse to lay people off to "survive these tough economic times" (by making these "tough economic times" even worse), and we've got another recession, but this one isn't industry-specific so there isn't much the government can do to prop it up, not that this administration could because it's run by a moron at the moment who will only look out for himself first, family second, friends (meaning people he wants to impress) third.
Go buy a bidet attachment for your toilet. You won't have to worry about TP.
People I know are already having meetings at work in NYC, planning for a quarantine. And apparently the trains into the city, like the Long Island Rail Road and whatnot, were pretty empty this morning. So that's nice.
There's nothing an agnostic can't do if he doesn't know whether he believes in anything or not.

The toilet paper thing? Yeah... Who knew...
As for the other... An alert came across my friends phone during a meeting we had stating a case had been confirmed by the hospital and CDC... But I've never been able to find any other confirmation. AND it didn't make the news this morning so I'm quite suspect...
