The thing with the toilet paper is weird. Not sure what was announced today that suddenly made everyone go to the store today but I stopped to get cat food and that aisle was completely wiped out. Same with the shelves where the antibacterial hand gel was. But no one was stocking up on anything else.
I admit I did stock up a little too. But for me that meant a couple extra cans of soup and two bottles of juice instead of one. There's no point in buying extra of anything perishable. I just bought the things sites said you might need if you had to self quarantine because you were sick. Soup, juice, tissues. But I think people got the advice of "stock up in case you get sick" with "stock up for civilization to collapse" nixed up.
I don't remember, did people do this before Y2K? I think I remember reading a story about a family in Texas that bought so much toilet paper that the kids were using it as mattresses because they had no other place for it all.
Well, I think maybe people didn't as much for Y2K because it seemed like a problem that was unfathomable to everyone? And also we had people who knew what they were doing working on it... maybe?
I went to the store at lunch to get something to eat and you could tell there was a tenseness, and the checkout clerk said people have been rude to her all day. The TP aisle was almost wiped out. It probably was yesterday too. But then the store got more. So... if the store keeps getting more, is the stocking up to the point you have TP for a year really necessary?
Everyone at work is now making jokes about it, but in that way that it's to relieve some of their own tension about it.
I know one person who has been ordered to self-quarentine. And everyone is going car-razy around here. I mean, I get it. Most people don't work from home, so they can't get to the grocery stores and whatnot right away, but at least go after work over the course of the week, dude.
I try to remind myself of this all the time:
There's nothing an agnostic can't do if he doesn't know whether he believes in anything or not.
That's exactly what the sites were telling everyone to do! Stock up slowly! It's what I did. I've just been buying a few things extra each time I go to the store. Things I'd want if I was stuck at home. They wanted people to do it that way to avoid this panicked over buying.
