On one hand, they're doing what they can to keep everyone working. Which is good. However, all of these little steps to mitigate the problem is more anxiety-inducing then if the country just shut everything all the way down for three weeks. This bit by bit, who knows what will happen next, is freaking everyone out.
A coworker at another store texted this morning because she's at work today because that store hasn't come up with a new schedule yet and she says everyone is saying they're just going to shut down that store. I'm not sure if it's a lack of any word from managers that are making everyone think the worst or if that's an actual option. TBH I wouldn't put it past the current owners. Supposedly our stores were all for sale anyhow so I don't know if they're going to keep them open hoping to still sell or close them all down to cut their losses. No idea what I'll do if they do. Like half the country my "savings" is my 401k, which isn't worth nearly as much as it was just a month ago and will it last me two years, (if my landlord doesn't then sell this place or kick me out for whatever reason), probably. But then I'd have nothing for my later years...
Was reading a think on Daily Kos (not sure how reliable they are) about two reports that say this could last for 18 months because it's way too late to flatten any curve and restrictions on daily life will probably get worse. The UK was actually floating the idea of just letting everything open again and try to actually infect as many people as possible in some effort to create herd immunity. But the thing is I don't think this is like other illnesses where if you get it once you build an immunity to it, so it's possible to get it more than once. And it seems that no, the young are not any more immune to it than anyone else. So all those 20something asshats still gathering and partying are at the same risk of getting sick as anyone else and even dying from it. It seems maybe it's more about blood type than anything. Although having other issues will play a role if one does get sick. One family lost three people.
Everyone is gonna get fucked by this. I know four trainers who worked at gyms who are out of work. I know people in IT who are probably going to lose their jobs over this. I work in Pharma to pay the bills, so I may be okay. I'm happy to have the work I have, but I'm putting off the idea of making a short film this year.
There's nothing an agnostic can't do if he doesn't know whether he believes in anything or not.
I've been kind of going on a rollercoaster all day, reading this and that. Online people are more freaked out than they appear to be in the world. Although maybe they are, they're just freaking out on the inside. I mean, the panic buying would indicate some freaked-out-ness. But it felt more like the buying one does to weather a storm. All the sites about this virus were just advising one buy enough to get by if they were stuck at home self-quarantining. So I think then people had this idea that everyone would just go about their lives like normal but if you got exposed but weren't either "immune-compromised" or elderly, you'd just chill out at home with the sniffles, eat your stockpile, then go back to work again. It really wasn't until Italy shut their entire country and Trump fucked up his announcement about the travel ban that everyone went nuts.
I'm furious that the administration had enough ample warning about what was to come to have a better plan then "pretend it isn't happening until we can't anymore" and refused tests from the WHO so relatives could form companies to make tests so they could make some money off all of this. As soon as they knew it was outside of China we should have had tests ordered and coming out the ears of every hospital, starting with those in dense population centers and those closest to major travel hubs. The order for more ventilators and masks should have been placed immediately. The Army Corps of Engineers should have been dispatched to find or build facilities to deal with anyone that was infected. In one town in Italy they've stopped it because what they did was TEST EVERYONE and if you had it, you were isolated. Then they tested everyone again. Guess what. No one had it. In S. Korea the created the drive-thru testing that took 10 minutes. But you were tested, you stayed put, if you had it, they isolated you. None of this "self-quarantine" crap, especially sending people home to their families. So facilities should have been found or made for the infected. Would have stopped that jackass that went to the conference and then infected all those other people and kept that other jackass from getting on a goddamn airplane with it.
Employee protection and economic stimulus bills should have been drafted and ready to go, ensure that anyone that had to be isolated couldn't lose their jobs, and maybe even offer businesses that lost employees some kind of compensation so people wouldn't try to avoid testing if they thought they were infected. And they'd hate it, but they would also need to have rules in place that no one could ask about someone's immigration status in order to be tested, treated, and housed if it was positive. Sorry folks, your cruelty will have to wait. (Because threatening to round up sick people and deporting them would not help anyone, including stopping it here. Except that's exactly what they are doing right now.)
Instead of doing those things, we got lies, denial, racism, blame games, and now everything is falling off a cliff and it turns out various members of the Senate were dumping stocks before the fall while lying to everyone else that this house on fire was fine, it's all fine... and now it's all down to various state governors banding together to try and "flatten the curve" of the number of infected so hospitals aren't overrun by too many cases at once, even though most places already are and tests STILL aren't available. It's a goddamn shit show, and I actively loath every person in the current administration and on a daily, nay hourly basis, I wish they'd all spontaneously combust.
Well today is the first official day of PAUSE. The GM had wanted me to come in today, even unofficially, to finish up the DMV from the last week of car sales. But I just called the DMV and they are closing too. They aren't even doing by appointment or via mail work anymore. So I'm not going anywhere today. My original plan had been to go to the laundromat and then swing by while I was out, do up the pack and send it out Fed Ex.
I used to go to youtube for entertainment type stuff. Trailer reaction, convention panels that people filmed, etc. But then when Captain Marvel came out I was getting notifications in my inbox every day with recommended videos that were nothing but hate for the movie before it even came out and started noticing the "up next" videos whenever I went on looking for something innocuous was always some more BS and it was just constant. So I don't go over there much for anything.
At this point, I think the only thing that is really going to stop this is if they can find a treatment for the virus after someone gets it. Because a vaccine is too far out and making everyone stay home isn't going to work for long because people are going to lose their patience and the fall out from that might feel like the lesser of two evils compared to a small percentage of people getting sick and dying.
