I think the panic buying might be over. I just got a notification in my inbox though that UPS is hiring. That doesn't surprise me. Delivery services are now going to be surging. They're looking for people for 4-hour shifts. I'm actually considering it.
So far no one I know has it. But I haven't been talking to anyone at work, really. It's weird because people are acting like this has been going on for months when in NY the total lockdown is only 3 days old. But without massive testing and isolating anyone that tests positive, as soon as they lift it, it's just going to start all over again. But hey, the DOW is up, and that's all that matters, right?
That's what I mean. It only took 3 days for people to start floating the idea of just killing off granny to protect their investments.
The unemployment figures skyrocketed, naturally. Not sure why anyone is surprised. A lot of companies are laying off their workforce so they can get unemployment so they have some money coming in while everyone waits this out. Not sure how many will be rehired, but it's going to be a significant amount. Where I work they already told everyone that was the plan. Everyone will use up their sick and vacation time first, then get a percentage of your vacation pay and if it's under a certain number, you can apply for partial unemployment. But they're going to keep paying for everyone's health insurance. Then when PAUSE ends, start bringing everyone back.
I realize not everyone is doing it the same so some of those jobs will not be coming back. But that's why they need a better stimulus package that gives more relief to the workers and not the companies. If people have money, they will spend it. If they spend it, businesses can afford to hire more people. Oh look, more people with money... to spend... etc. The idea that people would rather sit at home is ridiculous considering how batshit stir crazy everyone is after only a week.
Well kids, I got my letter yesterday saying that I'm "essential personnel" which means that I can stay out after curfew without getting a ticket. The county I live in has a curfew of 9pm to 6am, so if you're out after that you need paperwork. And no, I haven't worked in the housing industry for almost 4 years because fuck that. I haven't decided if I want to just call myself Raggedy Man or get a old hockey mask and go by the name Lord Humongous. Anywhoo, I'm off today and about to finish the shit show that is Picard. The sloppiest and dumbest writing I've ever seen on a 100 million dollar project. I'm done with Trek. And then I think I'll watch 1917 which looks amazing.
