I'll try to make this short. Undoubtedly, the most influential guitar player of his generation. Without Van Halen you don't have all of the hair metal that popped up in the 80's copying them and as a result, the backlash to those bands that created thrash, hardcore, ect. I would say that the first five albums should be in every rockers collection. VH2 and Diver Down are the weakest of these five, however they do have some gems and a certain charm to them. I never really got into the Hagar era and stopped listening to them after 5150 even though I saw them in concert several times after that.
Like I said in my post about Neil Peart, I was a bass player and started learning guitar the day after I saw Van Halen for the first time, so like many people, he made me want to learn to play guitar.
I know for the past two years there had been rumors about his health so while hearing of his passing is shocking, it isn't surprising.
So, to begin the year with Neil Peart, almost the end of the year and now Van Halen, and everything else that is going on, 2020 is shaping up to be the biggest shit show I've ever lived in my adult life.

I wasn't as much of a Van Halen fan as many of my friends, but there was no denying his talent.
Yeah, this year in particular just sucks.

Game changing talent for certain. I'd say probably the biggest leap since Hendrix.
But a steady diet of saggareets eventually catches up...
