A new show coming to the station formerly know as SciFi channel: Dark Matter.
Based on a 4 part comic series it's about the crew of a spaceship that wake up with no memory of who they are or why they are on the ship. And apparently there is a war on.
I was curious enough about the show that I ordered the comics. It sounds intriguing. And it's interesting that the TV guys who will be doing the show wrote the comic, which is a really unique way of pitching a show and building an audience before you even attempt to sell it to a tv network. 'See? It sold lots of copies and people loved it and we've got the first season all mapped out and ready to go already!' Maybe that didn't happen...
When did the Walking Dead start on TV? Because this comic was released in 2012. It'd be interesting if they intended it as a TV show pitch, didn't think they were going to get any positive answers and went the comic book route to get a following to sell...?

Right now we're in mid "season 5"...
But with them splitting up seasons like they did with Farscape... who knows.
From what I remember, the walking dead was a popular comic BEFORE the tv show was out. And the TV show is run by the same people that write the comics so the story stays true to the characters, even though the two story lines I'm told differ quite a bit.
EDIT: Frank Darabont actually was the one who brought it over to TV, and although they've divorced him from the project, that's how it got to TV.

I could see them being inspired by TWD to do the same. Create a comic and then make it a TV show. Not that it's a bad idea. Comics are basically already made story boards. So why not start bringing them to the big and small screen? Plus, there's less pressure for a comic to find an audience right away (says the person with zero clue if that is true). So you make something a comic first and see how it goes... then make it a TV show!
I got the comic yesterday and read it. It is very similar to many other things, but I do think I'll still like the show once it airs. Unless they go really cheap and campy with it.
It's got a very heavy Firefly vibe as it's a ship of outlaws that end up doing good for an outpost of miners against a large corporation. There is the memory issue, which is the built in mystery. And a random super genius girl. But there is an android on the ship (which in the comic seemed to look like a man but they cast a women for the show) and unlike the Firefly crew, they are well stocked and the ship is formidable.

NYPinTA: I know I had it on trying to get all the people who used to chat on Shield.TV (which is gone) and Whedonesque (which is shut down) but had no real way of getting their attention.
