Until we can invent TARDIS-like technology, portable houses will always be a pain in the ass. TARDIS-like tech with a Star Trek replicator and holodeck. The true dream house. Any lot, anywhere, any time, with a whole world on the inside too.

Aesthetics for me. Other than that, nothing. Those look aesthetically pleasing to me... In fact, given the price and features, I'm not sure why you'd want to build a house at all anymore... Wheels or no, I’d consider a kit house. Just customize it through the company and have them build it on site (or have a local contractor do it). I don’t want to have to screw around with an architect. I’m more interested in the amount of space and basic layout. I’m not too picky.

As I suspected the house already had multiple offers and the bank had accepted a week before. The house is just still on the site because they take their sweet time taking them down.

Now I"m wondering if it is less expensive to find a lot and build something.

I looked around cities that are “tiny house friendly,” and the answer is “it depends.”

I looked and any lots available are in the sketchy parts of town.

That's not surprising. I looked in Asheville, NC, because they're tiny house friendly. The inexpensive lots were about 20 minutes outside of town by car. The expensive lots were in the city. Now, 20 minutes out isn't too bad.
That said, what bites you in the ass is if the land isn't kitted out with water, electric, internet, sewage, etc. Because then you have to add all that. You'll probably also have to add a driveway. And you may have to grade the land so if it rains the water doesn't flow into your foundation.
Then there's the cost of the house itself, and all the bullshit that goes with that. Some tiny house companies will kit out your house and build it (if you're nearby), but you're looking at the cost of land, the cost of the utilities, the cost of the house, and then the labor to build the house.
But hey! The land is cheap!

Gotta say, those tiny houses are sounding more and more like those infomercials where they say they'll send you something for free or 2 bucks and you think, "Awesome!" and then you find out shipping is 160 dollars.

If I had the money right now... I'd be driving back there and buying a fifth wheel trailer...
Well... that and the time... and the ambition...

As much as some of them cost, I don't think they'd do the low price high shipping cost thing. I found one that cost around $85K before you factored in all the other costs.

I think that's the attraction to a tiny house, lower cost. The drawback is... TINY HOUSE.

Yeah. No matter how clever one is with storage, there is never enough, and sleeping on a mattress on the floor right above your kitchenette with only 3 feet of headroom is going to get old very quickly. I think some people have this idea that if they simplify their lives the won't need as much room, and although having less stuff might mean you don't need a walk-in closet in every room, humans still need room to move. I would watch that show on HGTV where a couple or someone was looking to get a tiny house and the realtor would show them options and it was funny when they realized just how small a tiny house really way. One couple ended up building one that I don't think could really qualify as a tiny house by the time they were done with all the adjustments they made. It was simply a one bedroom house. I think they'd be a great option if someone got land near a lake or something as a vacation spot. I think they have them in Sweden. People who live in the city have swatches of land in the country and they have this one room shed on them that's got what they need to cook, ect, but they basically camp out. It was more a secure place to keep their gear than it was an abode.

This technically fits the description of Tiny House in a lot of states because it's footprint/square footage is below a certain threshold. That said, the general perception is that they're 300 sq feet and smaller, which would suck. I've found that I don't think I want more than 750 sq feet. Who wants to clean/fill/maintain so much space? My mom's house is 2100 sq feet or so, and she uses maybe half that. I think, though, that the tiny house trend is a blip. Mainly because I think the cost most times is more than people are expecting.

And I think people are finding that no one wants to buy their tiny house when they are done. So they don't hold their value.

OK but that house you linked is super cute. If you have a lot with a nice view. Because that house would need a lot of curtains if you have neighbors.
