Just trying to organize everything, and spent this weekend emptying out the pantry and trying to make my kitchen more user friendly and it occurs to me that I have both too much stuff and probably not the stuff I should have. Like, I don't have a first aid kit nor do I really have a supply of candles or a flashlight in case the power goes out. (Of course the power has never gone out in our apartment for longer than 20 minutes since we moved in nearly 20 years ago.) But when I tried to google the things a person should have I got lists of things like, "real linen napkins" and "art that isn't posters taped to the wall" and WTF kind of advice is that? Also, none of the questions I have now were even remotely close to being covered in home economics class in High School.
And you know what else I'm bad at? Light bulbs. Either that or our electric in our apartment sucks and keeps surging because we go through light bulbs way to frequently to be normal. Plus I'm bad at choosing the right wattage.

There's a glorious lack of firearms on the "exhaustive" list...

Maybe because firearms are considered a given to the author? OR it's because most people don't actually need them because they aren't surrounded by wolves.

(Which reminds me that I have zero idea what happened to my dad's guns.)

Fire extinguisher is always a necessity. Especially in or near the kitchen. And fire alarm. Another good rule of thumb is to change your fire alarm batteries with the change of every season. They probably won't need it, but you will sleep better at night if you do this.

Forgot to add, I say this because when I was 2 months old my parent's house burned down and the when I was around 6 my next door neighbors house burned down in the middle of the night. I watched it from my bedroom window. What was the common denominator? No fire alarm.

I do have a fire extinguisher. But my smoke alarms haven't had the batteries changed in a while. Mostly because the one in the kitchen goes off every time I drain pasta and it's super annoying. I think it needs to be moved or something. But they're on my check list of things to get straightened out. I'm a little paranoid about fire actually...

Um... everything? The house I'm in was built in the 40s, I'm pretty sure. So it's nearing 70 years old... I know the wiring is a joke. Previous owner did everything on the cheap and current landlord is definitely wait until it's really broke before fixing it kind of guy. I really need to move.
