So it took a while to figure out what I wanted to do, but I'm finalizing plans now. The weekend after next I rented a theater and will screen one of my mom's favorite movies, "Singin' in the Rain". I was originally planning on doing something after 5 PM, but instead due to the theater's schedule, opted for 10 AM to 1 PM. So far this is what I've got:
I'm probably going to arrive at least a half hour before hand to set up, not that I'm expecting to have much. The theater has a "VIP" area that includes a small bar, so I'll probably set up some food there with photos and a guest book. I figure people can come in, sign the book, get something to eat, and mingle a bit or find seats. Then if anyone wants to say anything, they can. (To be honest, I probably won't.) Then about 10 after 11, the movie will start, and then everyone can go home at 1. (The movie is an hour and 46 minutes. I wasn't aware it was so long.)
I'm going to go in early next week to get a look at the space, see how big it is and how easy it would be for people to socialize before the movie.
The thing is, I was planning on just making a bunch of cookies, but since it's so early in the morning now I'm thinking the food needs to be more breakfast like. So, maybe muffins, and a few breakfast pizzas? Maybe a bunch of quiches. They can be handled easily for someone standing and talking or sitting and eating and not having to worry about silverware. I'm open to ideas on that one, FYI.
OK, so after looking around I think a fruit platter (thanks LL), a few quiches, some muffins, and I'll buy a few dozen bagels and chop them into bite size will be it. With coffee, tea, and OJ. I'll decide on how much of each after I create an "event" on Facebook (ugh) to get an idea of how many people will be coming. I figure maybe at most 50 people. If so, I can pare some of what I have planned down a bit... Just need for the theater to have outlets, a coffee maker, and hot water for tea. (That reminds me... I'll need sugar and creamer.)
I ordered serving stuff off Amazon, and a guest book. I found someone on Etsy that does memorial fliers. I think she does it up and sends back a file that I then get printed. I can do that. Maybe a few dozen. Then put photos of my mom in frames to bring... and that should be it, really. Right?
The memorial was yesterday. After I told my niece what I had planned she and her sister in law basically took over the food, and they made way too much. Not that I mind, but I feel bad about how much is going to go to waste now. :/ It took me forever to find someone with a large coffee pot, but a friend of mine from High School borrowed her mother's. However, she was a little late arriving and it took forever for the coffee to brew and because I under estimated how long it would take to set up we were still getting the tables sorted after most everyone arrived. We set up on the stage though in front of the screen instead of using the VIP room. Which was cool, but I should have asked the guy to put up the lights when I had gone to see the space so I would have known extra lighting was needed. I could have just brought my living room lamps from home. But other than that it was ok. Everyone seemed to really like the idea of it. But now I'm home and I have all this stuff I bought for it, like a package of 100 coffee cups and nearly 100 plastic spoons, knives, and forks and what the hell am I supposed to do with this stuff?
OK, I lied. When I said I didn't mind that my niece and her sister in law took over for the food. I do mind. I did mind. Because they did make way too much but also that they didn't get there till too late and I had no idea what they were making so it was disorganized and late and I hate that. And if I had known how few people were actually going to be there, I would have just picked up a couple of boxes of coffee from Panera rather than wait for my friends coffee maker to finally percolate, because it took forever, which I didn't know. It just didn't feel like enough. Or done well. Or whatever.
