Incredibles 2 - Visually... kinda boring. I watched the How to Train Your Dragon movies and I thought they were more compelling (I've been watching a lot of these lately, and I thought even Boss Baby had a more compelling visual style... but maybe I've just been overloaded by these movies). Story-wise, better than the first. Villain's identity was a bit obvious, I thought, at least for adults. There were some funny bits with Mr. Incredible taking care of Jack Jack. Action was good. The solution felt a bit forced at the end.
I have a rant about how Pixar's competitors are doing more visually interesting work - even daily/weekly cartoons like PJ Masks - but I'll save it for my new roommates.
There's nothing an agnostic can't do if he doesn't know whether he believes in anything or not.
I thought there was a missed opportunity where the raccoon and Jack Jack could have become friends and been a duo team up in the end action set piece where the raccoon could use him as a gun with his laser eyes. I also felt that the design of the other heroes was a bit odd. They seemed tonally off visually from the rest of the design of the film. Still loved it, though.
The first half takes place on the island and the second half in one location on a large estate. Felt like two different films. I prefer the second half as it felt like a monster movie with a large budget. But there were really no stakes because it felt like this was made just so they could get to the third one which I think will be very interesting if they do it right. I guess my favorite after the first one. But the first one is way ahead of it in terms of story. Light popcorn flick. See it in the theater if you must but I don't really think you need to. Ted Levine (Buffalo Bill from The Silence of the Lambs) shows up as the leader of a group of mercenaries charged with capturing the dinosaurs and bringing them back to the mainland. I kept waiting for him to say, "I'd shoot me. I'd shoot me so hard."
There are a lot of little shots that are a call-back to other scenes in the franchise which were kinda cool if you like that sort of thing. There is one that is a call-back scene from a different film that I liked. Remember at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark where Belloq steals the idol from Indy and he escapes? The scene where Indy runs telling Jock to start the plane and the Hovitos are behind him chasing him? Same thing, but in this you have the volcano on Isla Nubar erupting and Chris Pratt comes over the hill running followed by a ton of dinosaurs. I'm sure the director is a fan of Raiders.
Jim from The Office along with his family live in some kind of post-apocalyptic world where creatures hunt by sound and have pretty much ended life as we know it.
This might be my favorite monster flick in a long time. Fantastic tension and just good storytelling. There is one part with raccoons that should have been omitted and felt cheap. Otherwise, this is a solid flick and well worth your time.
